On My Knees Under God by matthew james Kay

My most recent animation; a mobius strip. It goes on and on, and it changes and becomes the same, its like a rosary or something, its meditative, its supposed to be quietly hopeful, entertaining and a bit boring at the same time, also beautiful and poetic...? The title comes from the lyrics of this song: lostandfoundgallery.blogspot.com/2010/01/all-same-mistakes-weekly-make-number-4.html

Empires decline – revisited by Pedro M Cruz

Empires decline – revisited from Pedro M Cruz on Vimeo.

The decline of the largest maritime empires of the 19 and 20th centuries.
A more sober and formal approach. The physics engine was tweaked in order to attain fluid interactions and a mitosis like split. Added the original 13 colonies (USA). Added Ireland. Cuba maintains its perceived independence date for the consistency of the chosen dates for the other territories.

There is more information displayed, as the former colonies persist on the map and head to their current geographical positions. Therefore it is possible to visualize in the end of the narrative how much of the world was once part of an Empire. The timeline is no longer linear as it speeds up if there is nothing going on.

The music was kindly composed for the purpose of this narrative by CHOP WOOD – chopwood.eu

CraftCube: Nap by THE LIGHT SURGEONS

CraftCube: Nap from THE LIGHT SURGEONS on Vimeo.

"CraftCube: Nap" features a set of two synchronized short films which together form a protrait of the work of glass maker Angela Jarman. The film reveals the processes involved in the creation of a piece of her worked entitled NAP. Together these films form the audio visual content for the Craft Coucil's set of touring installations know as The CraftCube initiative.

The film on the top was projected onto a large projection surface on the wall of the CraftCube, while the film on the bottom was presented through large plasma screen embedded into the surface of a display case, which also houses the finished object itself.

The CraftCube initiative presents new and exciting ways of displaying, interpreting and accessing contemporary craft with a focus on new technology.

The programme has been developed to showcase objects from the Crafts Council Collection - CraftCube: Collection - and to champion the work of Research Fellows that are at the cutting edge of contemporary practice - CraftCube: Research. Each CraftCube is an individual display environment, including objects and interpretation.

Strange Arrangements

synopsis

We wanted to make a series of moving sculptures that take inspiration from the great surrealists like dali and in particular his lobster telephone. We have tried to build intriguing objects that leave you wanting to see more. These objects are mechanical but at the same time organic in their movements. They are a collection of textures, objects and movements that create images that we wanted to see.

weareseventeen is a 4 man outfit (well, 3 men and 1 girl) based in london. We have been designing and making stuff move for 4 years now and have worked for clients like NBC Universal, Hotels.com, Toyota and a few others. We have a close relationship with the guys and girls over at Radium audio who we work with whenever we can.

The secret lives of invisible magnetic fields are revealed as chaotic ever-changing geometries . All action takes place around NASA's Space Sciences Laboratories, UC Berkeley, to recordings of space scientists describing their discoveries . Actual VLF audio recordings control the evolution of the fields as they delve into our inaudible surroundings, revealing recurrent ‘whistlers' produced by fleeting electrons . Are we observing a series of scientific experiments, the universe in flux, or a documentary of a fictional world?

Over time, celestial patterns can reveal themselves through the play of light and shadow on the world around us. Out of the Light is a CGI time based sculpture, which recreates these shadow phenomena to explore how we can make sense of the world through observation; we experience a solar eclipse as observed through the branches of a tree, the rhythm of a city as its shadows phase from days to months to years and the transit of Venus observed through the construction of simple man made tools. Viewing these events with the unaided eye allows for anomalies in the quality and nature of light which are played upon here, to explore our perceptual sensitivities.

This is the second pan from the 15 minute single screen version of Heliocentric. The full version consists of four timelapse pans each spanning the entire solar day. This one was shot in Brighton ,UK, summer 2009.

A Semiconductor work by Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt.
Sound by Semiconductor and BJ Nilsen.

Heliocentric is co-commissioned by AV Festival + Northern Lights Film Festival, UK. The single screen version will premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2010 in competition. The multi-screen installation will premiere during AV Festival 2010, at Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland, UK. Heliocentric uses time-lapse photography and astronomical tracking to plot the sun's trajectory across a series of landscapes. The entire environment feels to pan past the camera whilst the sun stays in the centre of each frame, enabling us to gauge the earth's rotation and orbit around the sun. As the Suns light becomes disrupted by passing weather conditions and the environment through which we encounter it, it audibly plays them as if it were a stylus.

It is usually all but impossible to visualize how the earth moves around the sun, even though we know it to be true. Instead we 'see' the sun move around us. The 'heliocentric' view of the universe was debated from the third century BC onwards and remained contentious into modern times.

Shooting into the sun creates many intriguing artifacts; lens flares and glare spill over the landscape, white outs burn the image, and colours bleed into one, creating aureoles. The power of the sun still exceeds what both the human eye and the artificial eye of the camera can bear. And whilst our knowledge of the universe is ever-growing, we can only encounter and know it from our own humble vantage point.

Black Rain by Semiconductor

Black Rain from Semiconductor on Vimeo.

Black Rain is sourced from images collected by the twin satellite, solar mission, STEREO. Here we see the HI (Heliospheric Imager) visual data as it tracks interplanetary space for solar wind and CME's (coronal mass ejections) heading towards Earth. Data courtesy of courtesy of the Heliospheric Imager on the NASA STEREO mission.

Working with STEREO scientists, Semiconductor collected all the HI image data to date, revealing the journey of the satellites from their initial orientation, to their current tracing of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Solar wind, CME's, passing planets and comets orbiting the sun can be seen as background stars and the milky way pass by.

As in Semiconductors previous work 'Brilliant Noise' which looked into the sun, they work with raw scientific satellite data which has not yet been cleaned and processed for public consumption. By embracing the artefacts, calibration and phenomena of the capturing process we are reminded of the presence of the human observer who endeavors to extend our perceptions and knowledge through technological innovation.

URBAN EARTH: LONDON

URBAN EARTH is a project to (re)present our habitat by walking across some of Earth’s biggest urban areas. The media distorts the way we see our world(s) with stereotypical images highlighting the most extremes of places. URBAN EARTH aims to expose what our cities really look like away from the bias and spin of commercial agendas.

The Chimera Project_Newcastle & Gateshead by THE LIGHT SURGEONS

The Chimera Project_Newcastle & Gateshead from THE LIGHT SURGEONS on Vimeo.

The Chimera Project:

In 2002 The Light Surgeons played two sell-out shows of their documentary performance All Points Between at the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. The events generated a lot of interest, and the Tyneside Cinema invited The Light Surgeons to do a residency project in Newcastle.
TLS sought to apply their self-sampling aesthetic to a different kind of filmmaking. Taking inspiration from the Surrealist palour game of exquisite corpse, their idea was to create a portrait of a city through a creative collaboration with its local inhabitants – artists, musicians, writers, photographers and animators observing and commenting on their own city.
The films structure would then evolve through a process of mass observation - each participating artist creating elements of the final collage that would represented a chimera of the city. The finished films were also remixed and performed live alongside the original musical scores composed for each film.

The Chimera Project_Newcastle & Gateshead:

The first experiment brought together Newcastle based artists: Christo Wallers, Jackie Scollen, Steve Bird, Laura Reid, James Postlethwaite, Huw Thomas, Michael Jeffries, Peter Clark, David McClure, Alex McGregor, and Tom Bland.
The resulting film is a psycheo-geographical map of the city through interviews, field recording, animations and audiovisual tracks. It reflects the city’s people: their hopes and cynicism towards their bid to become European city of culture, their military and seafaring heritage, and their love of football - capturing its fast changing architectural landscape.
The project was run over a six month period through a series of workshops and was edited by Chris Allen, James Price, and Jude Greenaway.

The Chimera Project_Middlesborough (Duration 28 minutes)

This film was produced in 2003 as the flagship commission for the first North East AV Festival that brought together the three regional cities of Newcastle, Middlesborough and Sunderland. The project was directed from a production space in the city over that autumn by TLS member James Price as artist in residence and was then edited by The Light Surgeons at their London base.

The local contributing artists were Jamie Macdonald, Nicky Peacock, Clive Tonge, Lindsay Roe, Liz McCormack, Sam Harrison, Rayees Rashid, Robert Page, Russell Smith, Marni Henderson, Katherine O’Connor, Imogen Busby, and Marty Collantine.

The film charts a day in the life of this troubled but proud North East town. The industry that gave birth to the urban area is still very present in the town, but large scale unemployment and misguided governance have given the area terrible problems with deriliction, drugs, and prostitution, and a bad image problem in the country at large. The film looks at the people who choose to live there and how a sense of community, love, home, and hope keep them there.
