Solidarités International et BDDP Unlimited veulent faire couler de l'encre by BDDP Unlimited
Solidarités International et BDDP Unlimited veulent faire couler de l'encre from BDDP Unlimited on Vimeo.
To mark World Water Day, on March 22nd Solidarités International and its agency BDDP Unlimited will roll out a campaign to build awareness of the scourge of undrinkable water.Today, it is estimated that 3.6 million people, including 1.5 million children under the age of 5, die every year of diseases borne by undrinkable water, making it the world’s leading cause of death.
Yet the public isn’t aware of it and political leaders do not demonstrate the drive it takes to end the terrible deaths. The campaign calls on journalists to spread awareness of this scourge and appeal to readers to sign a petition that will be personally handed to the French president during the 6th World Water Forum in March 2012. To evoke the silent and invisible threat of unhealthy water, BDDP Unlimited opted for a minimalist approach that is both visually appealing and surprising, using water and ink exclusively. The spot shows the power of ink to reveal the invisible.
The spot, created by BDDP Unlimited, produced by Hush and directed by Clément Beauvais, a young director, illustrator, musician and photographer. His multiple talents and mastery of various techniques enabled him to both create the drawings and direct the spot. The campaign will be seen from mid-March on TV, in cinemas, on the Internet and in print. A dedicated web site, votregouttedeau.org, will gather signatures for the petition.

YOUR LIFE IS ON FIRE
NO CLOUD MAY HARM YOU IN THE HEAVENS YOU ARE IN.
NO FROST MAY BURN YOUR HARVEST THAT YOU HAVE NOT BROUGHT IN.
NO RAT CAN BITE YOU, IN THE DEEPEST OF ALL SLEEPS.
THE FIRE IS INSIDE OF YOU.
TRUELY, THE FIRE INSIDE OF YOU!

Complicated by Gabriel Shalom
Cornelia and Holger Lund of the Stuttgart-based media art gallery Fluctuating Images asked me to contribute a music video for the “Vidos” DVD release to accompany the new solo album “Dos” from Michael Fakesch. The CD/DVD combination release is a tried and true format for Fakesh; in 2004, as a member of Funkstörung, he assembled a who’s who of international designers when releasing the “Isolated” DVD as a companion to the CD “Disconnected” album on !K7 Records.
Patrizia Kommerell and I had purchased some vintage microfiche reader equipment in 2006 for an installation project and had always wanted an opportunity to use the characteristic look and feel of the devices for another function. After scrapping several narrative treatments, we settled on a purely graphic concept which combined analog motion with digital postproduction.
Our production technique was to use the microfiche reader’s generously-sized viewfinder apparatus as a means for controlling the motion of graphic elements placed inside. The result was a number of single takes in which I danced the apparatus in time to Fakesch’s music, achieving a number of organic takes which would all contain a natural relationship to the rhythm of the song.
The video material was composited along with select pictures from our archives. We chose images which depict obsolete analog communications and media technologies, adding to the vintage flair of the well-established analog aesthetic.
The resulting unique visualization of the song clashed the electronic sounds with analog images in a satisfying manner, while also allowing glimpses of the video-making process to peek through the graphics.

Twenty-First Century Bonfire by Jason Eppink
Twenty-First Century Bonfire from Jason Eppink on Vimeo.
Twenty-First Century Bonfire is an aleatoric light sculpture intended for collective viewing in quiet, low-light, intimate spaces. The Bonfire consists of seven rescued television sets topped by protruding matrices of PVC pipe that diffuse live television broadcasts into a shifting array of rich colors and abstract shapes. These heavily-researched and targeted messages of consumption—all provided free of charge by unwitting corporate collaborators—are filtered into abstraction simply by scattering them inside the PVC piping, rendering the process entirely transparent to the curious observer.
The work is intended to be experienced, like an actual bonfire, at the center of a gathering of viewers. Situated accordingly, the installation becomes a space to be quiet, to meditate, to think, and to sit with others without the constant pressure to sustain conversation. When there is nothing to be said, the Bonfire is a returning point, encouraging collective silence and shared meaningful moments of introspection.
Ultimately, Twenty-First Century Bonfire is an attempt to rescue one of our most deeply ingrained instincts—the need to sit with others around a glowing source of light—from the homogenizing three-act structure and the corporate consumption agenda.

Falling by Kenneth Onulak

kaluno.com
This is my final animation for my Fall 2009, Intermediate Animaiton class. We were given a list of words to spark an idea, and I chose the word Falling. I took that word and expanded it to everything that I thought falling is, or things that represent falling.
This project took 6 weeks to create. I started off with a rough and loose storyboard and animatic, to allow myself to change things as needed since I was on a tight time schedule. From there I dove head first into the animation, driving through it full force. While animating, I recorded a few different people for voices that I would add later and to start getting a feel for timing of the piece.
After I finished the aniamtion, I shot all the images with a still camera using dragon. I took the high resolution images and brought them into Adobe After Effects where I timed out all the animation and compositied everything. From there I exported the movie and added the audio in Final Cut Pro. After that I exported the final video which you see here.
Overall I am very pleased with the work I acommplished in the 6 week time period. My next step for this piece is to create an additional sound effects track and maybe even a music track.
This piece consists of over 1400 final drawings, not including all the mistakes, and extra drawings used to create the final drawings.
Lip Sync by Kenneth Onulak
© 2010 Kenneth Onulak
kaluno.com
For this assignment I had to create I character out of clay from either the waist or knees up to do lip sync with. We had the option of either making replacemnet mouths or sculpting the mouth as we animated. I went with the sculpting option.
After designing my character, something I wanted him to do was be able to bend in a vertical motion. So I designed the armature to be able to support the character while keeping it light weight and maintaing its flexibility by making every white stripe out of ultra light sculpy. Then filling in the gaps with plasticine to allow him to bend. He is atached to a piece of pink foam that is attached to a piece of plywood to help keep him stable and to attach him to the table when animating.
I recorded the audio for the lip sync, then brought it into Dragon Stop Motion once I was done editing it, and added any notes, what the character was saying, and mouth shapes when and where they happened as reference for animating.
Once I was finished shooting everything, I composited all the images and sound together in After Effects.
Enjoy!
Speed of Light - United Visual Artists (UVA)
Speed of Light celebrates the tenth anniversary of broadband in the UK. Stripped back to its essentials, optical fibre is a thin strand of glass, with nothing more than a flickering beam of light traveling along it. United Visual Artists have used this beam as the starting point for the work.
Battles, Tonto by United Visual Artists
UVA was commissioned by Warp Films to create our first live-action music video, for the new Battles single, “Tonto”. We created a unique LED installation in a disused Welsh slate mine - an audio synchronised field of light contrasting with the rugged terrain. The video consists of our documentation of the band’s marathon 11 hour performance, as well as a series of time lapse pieces from the surrounding geography. The cover artwork for the single is also taken from the shoot, and was art directed by UVA.

Making Of... Moray McLaren - We Got Time
All the animations seen in the music video were created in camera. No stopframe techniques, or computer super-imposing was used; what you see is what rolled off the camera. The animations in the side-on views were produced by the camera capturing the moving reflections from the mirrored carousels, and the animations in the top-down views were created by matching the cameras frame rate to that of spinning record. The transitions between each section of animation was created by simply cutting or wiping between the bits of footage.
All the animations were created, drawn and coloured by the director David Wilson.
