Falling by Kenneth Onulak

© 2010 Kenneth Onulak

kaluno.com

This is my final animation for my Fall 2009, Intermediate Animaiton class. We were given a list of words to spark an idea, and I chose the word Falling. I took that word and expanded it to everything that I thought falling is, or things that represent falling.

This project took 6 weeks to create. I started off with a rough and loose storyboard and animatic, to allow myself to change things as needed since I was on a tight time schedule. From there I dove head first into the animation, driving through it full force. While animating, I recorded a few different people for voices that I would add later and to start getting a feel for timing of the piece.

After I finished the aniamtion, I shot all the images with a still camera using dragon. I took the high resolution images and brought them into Adobe After Effects where I timed out all the animation and compositied everything. From there I exported the movie and added the audio in Final Cut Pro. After that I exported the final video which you see here.

Overall I am very pleased with the work I acommplished in the 6 week time period. My next step for this piece is to create an additional sound effects track and maybe even a music track.

This piece consists of over 1400 final drawings, not including all the mistakes, and extra drawings used to create the final drawings.

Lip Sync by Kenneth Onulak

© 2010 Kenneth Onulak

kaluno.com

For this assignment I had to create I character out of clay from either the waist or knees up to do lip sync with. We had the option of either making replacemnet mouths or sculpting the mouth as we animated. I went with the sculpting option.

After designing my character, something I wanted him to do was be able to bend in a vertical motion. So I designed the armature to be able to support the character while keeping it light weight and maintaing its flexibility by making every white stripe out of ultra light sculpy. Then filling in the gaps with plasticine to allow him to bend. He is atached to a piece of pink foam that is attached to a piece of plywood to help keep him stable and to attach him to the table when animating.

I recorded the audio for the lip sync, then brought it into Dragon Stop Motion once I was done editing it, and added any notes, what the character was saying, and mouth shapes when and where they happened as reference for animating.

Once I was finished shooting everything, I composited all the images and sound together in After Effects.

Enjoy!

Speed of Light - United Visual Artists (UVA)

Speed of Light celebrates the tenth anniversary of broadband in the UK. Stripped back to its essentials, optical fibre is a thin strand of glass, with nothing more than a flickering beam of light traveling along it. United Visual Artists have used this beam as the starting point for the work.

Battles, Tonto by United Visual Artists

UVA was commissioned by Warp Films to create our first live-action music video, for the new Battles single, “Tonto”. We created a unique LED installation in a disused Welsh slate mine - an audio synchronised field of light contrasting with the rugged terrain. The video consists of our documentation of the band’s marathon 11 hour performance, as well as a series of time lapse pieces from the surrounding geography. The cover artwork for the single is also taken from the shoot, and was art directed by UVA.

Making Of... Moray McLaren - We Got Time

All the animations seen in the music video were created in camera. No stopframe techniques, or computer super-imposing was used; what you see is what rolled off the camera. The animations in the side-on views were produced by the camera capturing the moving reflections from the mirrored carousels, and the animations in the top-down views were created by matching the cameras frame rate to that of spinning record. The transitions between each section of animation was created by simply cutting or wiping between the bits of footage.

All the animations were created, drawn and coloured by the director David Wilson.

Four Letter Words by Rob Seward

robseward.com/documentation/four_letter_words/

Four Letter Words consists of four units, each capable of displaying all 26 letters of the alphabet with an arrangement of fluorescent lights.

The piece displays an algorithmically generated word sequence, derived from a word association database developed by the University of South Florida between 1976 and 1998. The algorithms take into account word meaning, rhyme, letter sequencing, and association.

The algorithm's tendency towards scatological or "dark" subject matter is influenced by a variety of language and perception studies, especially Elliot McGinnies' 1949 study "Emotionality and Perceptual Defense."

While the piece was conceived with idea of displaying algorithmically generated lists, it was designed with flexibility and expandability in mind. The individual units can be connected ad-infinitum, and are theoretically capable of displaying any length of text. While Four Letter Words deals with a specific range of content, the technology can be easily expanded for future textual experiments.

TODOR & PETRU

France continues to kill it in the music video world as seen in this latest piece of greatness, an un-offical video for The Thunderclaps called Tudor Petru. In collaboration with WIZZ, this animation collective (Remi Bastie, Nicolas Dehghani, Jonathan Djob Nkondo, Nicolas Pegon and Jérémy Pires) are still students at the powerhouse that is Gobelins.

Having worked with WIZZ on Jesus 2000 last year, they came in with their footage and camped out for two months to create one of the more captivating and energetic pieces of live-action and 2D mixed-media I’ve seen it quite sometime.

WIZZ has also recently joined Blacklist’s roster, so keep a look out for more great work from them!

A Short Animation Inspired by the Works of İlhan Koman

Plato Art Space is proud to present Candaş Şişman’s video dedicated to famous sculptor İlhan Koman produced for the exhibition İlhan Koman: Hulda Festival, a Journey into Art and Science opening on the 22nd September, 2010.
İlhan Koman’s unique design approach in his form studies also inspires contemporary art works. The video installation Flux by young artist Candaş Şişman can be defined as a digital animation which is inspired from the structural features of some of İlhan Koman’s works like Pi, 3D Moebius, Whirlpool and To Infinity... A red circle, which is colored in reference to the red radiators of Ogre, is traced in a morphological transformation which re-interprets the formal approach of Koman’s works. The continuous movement sometimes connotes the formal characteristics of Pi, 3D Moebius, Whirlpool and To Infinity..., as well as the original formal interpretations of the design principles of the works . In Flux, Koman’s design process in the making of the Pi series has been treated as the emerging of a sphere from a two-dimensional circle by the principle of increasing the surface; and that simple direction is re-interpreted in digital medium. Thanks to this, in the digital animation an entirely different form serial that does not resemble Pi yet remaining its design principle can be followed through the flow of a circle to the sphere. As a conscious attitude of the artist, this work is not designed in a direct visual analogy with Koman’s works. During the animation, none of the moments of the transforming form look like Pi or 3D Moebius, however the subjective reading of Koman’s approach can be observed.

With the integration of the sounds of various materials – which Koman used in his sculptures – Flux turns into an impressive spatial experience. Flux, also exemplifies that Koman’s work can be re-interpreted by the analysis and manipulation of form in the digital medium.

The Reverence Collection by Scott Pagano

spend some time with me forever (miley cyrus - party in the usa)
27:50 | HD video with stereo audio

This work is a part of a series created in early 2010 called “The Reverence Collection”. Initially designed for a gallery installation but in light of the Justin Bieber 800% slower phenomenon (soundcloud.com/shamantis/j-biebz-u-smile-800-slower) - I figured it was a sign that the release of these pieces be delayed no longer.

If you have the opportunity please watch these pieces in a dark room with the image as large as possible and with the sound turned up. Enjoy the break from chaos.

Project Description:

The Reverence Collection is a series of sound/image works created by transforming pop music videos into epic slowly undulating audiovisual environments. The source material for the pieces is derived from a careful selection of contemporary top-of-the-charts pop music videos. The transfiguration of fast disposable cultural detritus into a space for slowness, contemplation, and exploration of detail on a time-scale that is less and less attainable amidst the tempo of contemporary society is a modern digital alchemy, turning a slice of the short-attention-span questionable-message cultural data stream into a counterpart 180 degrees from the original motives. The works are designed for reflective introspection and trance-like detachment from a constant crushing inundation by the constant consumption of sensory pollution.

The color and audio in the pieces is sources is derived entirely from the original materials. No additional sound elements are introduced and the rich epic ambient ethereal soundscapes are the result of warping and recomposing the three plus minute disposable pop tracks. In a world that requires constant feedback, communication, consumption, and response - the work strives to take a shard of that chaotic density and turn the raw source material into an intense environment for introspection and meditative focus on deceivingly simple compositions of evolving sound and image.

In a similar fashion to the sound, the imagery is stretched, processed, and shattered to be used as raw color information for the skeletal backbone of the glass-like sculptural forms that slowly undulate and glimmer with the audio. The creation of almost-still slowness from the fast-paced distraction-dynamics invites the potential to deny the attention-deficit culture around us and embrace the opportunity to be enveloped by light and sound.

The Antikythera Mechanism by Scott Pagano

The Antikythera Mechanism is a graphic-fueled experimental narrative journey,
traversing snow covered alien desert landscapes, fractured forests, and hyper-futuristic
cities. In this re-imagining of the discovery of the Antikythera Mechanism (an ancient
mechanical computer - dating back to 150-100 BCE), our surreal fairy tale follows our
guide as she unearths a mysterious object that acts as a catalyst to unfold reality and
open up a series of answers in the form of worlds ranging from distorted natural vistas
to stylized synthetic futurescapes. The film was featured on BT’s 2006 DVD release
This Binary Universe.
